For most women, menstrual periods are a simple fact of life. But for women who suffer from abnormal bleeding,
called menorrhagia (men-or-ah-jah), there is nothing simple about it. abnormal bleeding can be
uncomfortable and disruptive to many women's lives, as they often cause women to rearrange their schedules around
their period, limit participation in favorite activities, constantly wear dark clothing, and/or cope with pain and
fatigue.
If you have abnormal bleeding, you are not alone. In fact, approximately 1 in 5 women of reproductive age
suffer from them.
Symptoms Every woman's menstrual cycle is different and there is a wide range of what defines a normal period. One of the main indicators of abnormal bleeding is that your period consistently interferes with your regular activities or lifestyle every month. Blood loss from abnormal bleeding also can cause anemia in some women, making them feel tired or lethargic during their cycle. If your period is so heavy that it causes you to stay home from work or avoid social interactions because you're afraid the bleeding will cause an accident, you may have what is clinically known as menorrhagia.
Other symptoms of menorrhagia include:
- Periods that last longer than 7 days
- Menstrual flow that soaks through one or more tampons or napkins every hour for several consecutive hours
- Menstrual flow that includes large blood clots
- Fatigue or shortness of breath (which are symptoms of anemia caused by blood loss)
If you think you may suffer from heavy menstrual periods, take this self-quiz and discuss your results with
one of our gynecologist. If you have abnormal bleeding, Complete Healthcare for Women offers a one-day treatment
option.
Causes
There are a number of medical conditions that may cause or contribute to abnormal bleeding, such as:
- Hormone Imbalance — an imbalance of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone can cause abnormal bleeding
- Fibroids and Polyps — usually benign (non-cancerous) growths in the uterus that can cause uterine bleeding secondary to structural defects
- Infection or Disease — certain types of cancer or infections in the uterus can cause heavy menstrual bleeding
- Medications — some drugs such as anticoagulants (drugs that prevent the clotting of blood) or anti-inflammatory medications can cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Treatment
The impact of menorrhagia goes beyond disrupting women's lives - it is also the cause of a large portion of the 600,000
hysterectomies performed each year, many of which may be unnecessary.
The good news for women with abnormal bleeding is that there are available solutions, ranging from drug therapy to surgical
options, that are designed to reduce heavy menstrual flows and are less invasive alternatives to hysterectomy.
One simple and minimally invasive option, known as endometrial ablation, is now available at Complete Healthcare
for Women and does not require any hospital visits or stays. This one-day solution is designed to resolve heavy menstrual
flows by removing the lining of the uterus. Because the treatment is used in the gynecologist's office, you can go home
the same day and get back to your normal activities more quickly.
